Meeting Mike Claywood. Q’s & A’s.
Age? “That’s not important. Let’s just say I am older and far, far wiser now!”
The idea? “Inspired by life. Things I saw, heard, people I met, some who were undercover and places that are not what they seem.”
Is this about you, your life? “Obviously I’ve put a few experiences in, like training, places described like Cumbria. But no, the characters are not me or my life.”
Anyone you know then? “No. Not particularly.”
Have you written any other books like this? “No. This is my first novel. It was inspired by events and places in Norfolk, but events that can take place in the wider world.”
Is any of it real? “Oh, tricky question! When I was twelve, I saw a waterworks that looked suspicious. It could have been a secret missile site, you know, like all countries have, disguised. Let’s just say that there are a lot of things I know about that other people do not seem to know. Characters? Maybe some drawn from life, otherwise, some scenes would be so hard to make up. Like all novels, it’s what and who you know, the imagination part is being able to mix them all together to make exciting reading.”
Are you married? (He laughs!) “Tried that, doesn’t seem to work for me as I got used and abused. Love my children though and we are very close, as father and daughter should be, supporting each other.”
What’s this Trans-genre thing? “Exactly what it says on the synopsis. It begins, as one reader puts it, like a John le Carré spy thriller, then flows through other areas of life, like boredom, casual sex, some characters psychological traits, leading to a big climax.”
Yes, that’s one heck of a ending! Thank you.
